From Newsarama:
The Avengers may be ending in April, but Marvel's already got a new group on deck to stand in -- and they're from the future.
Marvel has announced a new Secret Wars 2099 series with the never-seen Avengers of the year 2099 stepping forward into what's left of their universe, according to IGN. The book is by the Spider-Man 2099 creative team of Peter David and Will Sliney, and that series will end in April with their storylines carried on in Secret Wars 2099.
David says the Avengers of Secret Wars 2099 will be a corporate-sponsored team under the watch of Alchemax, with the writer noting that it's similiar to his recent All-New X-Factor run but that Alchemax is "more or less running the United States in 2099."
One thing this won't tie into David says is Secret Wars, interestingly enough.
"It’s set on Battleworld the way the others are, but honestly, it doesn’t tie into Secret Wars beyond that," David says to IGN. "The events of Secret Wars proper might be mentioned in passing somewhere, but [Secret Wars 2099] is definitely its own story."
Marvel is keeping the length of the Secret Wars 2099 series under wraps according to IGN, but David says he'll write it "as long as" Marvel and the readers want.
Here are design sketches by Sliney of the Avengers 2099 team, featuring Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, and Hawkeye
Commentary: It never really occurred to me until I was reading this article that we never really had these characters in 2099. Captain America did sort of appear in some of the later specials, but the line was basically on its way out at that point anyway, so I am not sure what that was all about.
I am not sold on these character designs for the most part. Hawkeye with the wings was a little too literal for my tastes. Captain America looks like a indy wrestler with the bare arms. I did like the designs Black Widow Wasp and Iron Man though.
Peter David and Will Sliney have done some great work on Spider-Man 2099, and in my review of the last issue, I had mentioned that I had hoped we would get more of a focus on the 2099 universe. So turning this book into Secret Wars 2099 under the same creative team is a great idea to me. I was also real curious how this all fits in with the end of All-New X-Factor (also by Peter David) where we find out that book is also tied into the 2099 universe. I hope we get to see some hints of what everything built in All-New X-Factor led to in 2099. Though there is some confusion on whether 2099 is the future or another universe entirely. Secret Wars, Spiderverse, and Amazing Spider-Man all seemed to give us slightly different takes on all that, and I'm not sure how it all fits together.
I also hope that we get to see what happened to the rest of the 2099 characters. I know that many of them had basically died by the end of the line, but we did see Punisher 2099 during Spider-Verse, so I'm hoping that we'll get some more appearances. I especially miss the X-Men 2099!
