Welcome back to Critical Blast’s weekly look at what new comics you should check out each week. Just a warning, I make these picks pretty much a week BEFORE I actually get to read any of these comics, so if something is a stinker, I take no blame on that. Let's get to it!
GENERATION ZERO #1 – Valiant’s newest series is a spinoff of Harbinger and Bloodshot. Seems like it could be a fun take on the young superhero team. I love books like New Mutants, Generation X, Teen Titans, etc, etc, so I am looking forward to seeing what Valiant can do to put a new twist on the genre.
BLUE BEETLE REBIRTH #1 – Jaime and Ted Kord in the same book? YES, PLEASE! I am a fan of both Beetles, and I really hope this book gets some attention. Neither character has ever set the world on first in terms of sales in the past.
MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS 2016 ANNUAL #1 – Hefty price tag on this one at $8. But Boom has done a great job with Power Rangers, including giving us a very different take on the history of the Green Ranger in the last issue. This one is a bunch of short stories featuring a variety of MMPR characters. I will probably pick it up, even with the high cover price.
VENOM SPACE KNIGHT #11 – I loved the Venom series that expanded on Flash Thompson as Venom. But, putting him on Guardians of the Galaxy held zero appeal to me, so I haven’t picked up Space Knight at all. I am literally only buying this because of Civil War II (like Mockingbird last week). I really need someone to stage a comic event intervention to save me from myself…
TEEN TITANS #23 / TITANS #2– I can’t believe the New-52 TEEN TITANS series is still going. Someone needs to give it a mercy killing. Teen Titans has been one of the real low points of New-52, which is a shame because I typically love Teen Titans. Really hoping Rebirth can save the book. That said TITANS #2 comes out this week, and that has been an excellent series so far!
WONDER WOMAN #5 – They really should have split Wonder Woman into two series. I actually am enjoying both the current storyline and the alternating issues with a new version of Wonder Woman Year One, but it just makes the series feel real disjointed to keep jumping back and forth from issue to issue.
ARCHIE #11 – I have been enjoying this Archie relaunch quite a bit, and the current arc with Archie accidentally getting involved in local politics to the detriment of his friends and community has been great. Waid seems to have a lot to say with this series, and it continues to be must read for me every month.
DUCK AVENGER #0 – I love Disney’s comics, especially when it comes to Donald, Scrooge, and company. They haven’t always been easy to get in America, and IDW has been reprinting a lot of Disney stories from around the world. The Duck Avenger stories they have featured in the last year or so of Donald Duck have been great, so I am glad to see them expanding their exposure. My only gripe is these books continue to not be available digital, which makes it a real pain to keep up.
DISNEY’S DARKWING DUCK #4 – Another great comics feature Disney’s ducks. But same gripe as above, no digital makes it hard to keep up with this series for me. BUT, it is well worth it. If you were ever a fan of the cartoon, you need to buy this series!
