Welcome back to Critical Blast’s weekly look at what new comics you should check out each week. Just a warning, I make these picks pretty much a week BEFORE I actually get to read any of these comics, so if something is a stinker, I take no blame on that. Let's get to it!
Lots of new series to cover this week…
- CHAMPIONS #1 and JESSICA JONES #1 – Even though we are only about halfway through Civil War II, Marvel is already going full steam on their new relaunch…at least I think. They are always a bit vague on substance, just telling us “HERE IS THE NEXT BIG THING.” I am actually really looking forward to both of these books. ALIAS is one of my all-time favorite series, and CHAMPIONS is a great way to move Marvel forward with a bunch of legacy characters.
- SHIPWRECK #1 – Aftershock. Warren Ellis. Phil Hester. I would pretty much buy this book no matter what, but fortunately it seems to be a really cool book. “Dr Jonathan Shipwright, sole survivor of a very unusual and very secret shipwreck, doesn’t know where he is. Seemingly trapped on an endless road, in pursuit of a saboteur who holds the key to his salvation — or doom. Industry legend WARREN ELLIS joins AfterShock comics with this mysterious and captivating tale full of shock, secrets and surprises.” Definitely count me in.
- SHADE THE CHANGING GIRL #1 – More from DC’s Young Animals line. Doom Patrol was real odd, but I really enjoyed it. I will probably be giving each of these books a shot. It’s important to support new, creative ideas. Too many people complain about events and crossovers, but they don’t support the smaller books, so it’s a bit of a contradicting message.
- HE-MAN/ THUNDERCATS #1 – Purely a nostalgia trip for me, but I have wanted this for as long as I can remember. My He-Man and Thundercats figures fought often, so this is totally geared towards me. Can’t wait!
- DEATH OF X #1 – I know the X-Men books have been getting a lot of hate, but for the most part, I’ve been enjoying them. Not really looking forward to this endless war with the Inhumans, mostly because the Inhumans bore me to no end. But I do enjoy the creative teams on most of the X-Men books, so I will likely be a reader anyway.
- STRANGE ATTRACTORS #5 – Real unexpected treat from Charles Soule. This book is pretty deep, looking at how little things can cause big changes. I never have any idea where this book is going, but it’s been a hell of a ride.
- UNCLE SCROOGE #19 – Last issue told us the story of Glittering Goldie’s granddaughter, Dickie Duck. It might have been my favorite Disney Duck story I’ve ever read. Amazing that it took 50 years to finally be released in America. I absolutely love that IDW has been releasing so much “lost” Disney Duck stories. Always one of my favorite comics each month.
