Welcome back to Critical Blast’s weekly look at what new comics you should check out.   Just a warning, I make these picks pretty much a week BEFORE I actually get to read any of these comics, so if something is a stinker, I take no blame on that.  Let's get to it!

Comics shipping this week

  • CEREBUS IN HELL #1 – I was a little annoyed that CEREBUS IN HELL 0 didn’t come out digitally, so I ended up buying a copy off Amazon.  Guess I will probably end up doing the same for the rest of this series.  I actually haven’t started reading it.  My plan is to finish Cerebus first and then read it all at once.  Dave Simms recently made Cerebus available digitally, and I have been slowing making my way through the series (it can be a bit dense).  Still very happy to have some new Cerebus around for the 40th anniversary.
  • WWE #2 – I am actually surprised that I enjoy this book as much as I have.  WWE comics in the past have been very hit or miss.  This comic takes the smart approach as to just focus on the storylines and action we’ve seen, and not try to build up some crazy mythology to it.  The only problem is that it ends up being way behind.  The first issue dealt with Seth Rollins’ winning the WWE title….at the 2015 Wrestlemania.  It makes the comic feel very dated.
  • BATWOMAN REBIRTH #1 – I really like Batwoman, especially in her recent appearances in DETECTIVE COMICS.  Glad to see DC giving her another chance at the spotlight, as she’s a very unique character and adds a lot to the Batman lore.  Hopefully this book will be able to find a fanbase because it should be very good.
  • SUPER SONS #1 – ABOUT TIME!  Been waiting for this book pretty much since DC Rebirth was first announced.   Superboy and Robin play off each other really well, and this should be an entertaining series.  Definitely hoping this leads to a new Young Justice, since that is still my all-time favorite “young hero” comic.
  • WILD STORM #1 – Very curious about this Wild Storm relaunch.  I actually like Ellis a lot, though he can’t keep a deadline.  But his Stormwatch is among my all-time favorite comic runs, so I can’t wait to see what he can do with the Wildstorm universe.
  • INVINCIBLE #133 – Starting its final arc, INVINCIBLE is only a quarter this week.  One of the best superhero comics on the shelf.  INVINCIBLE is not afraid to smash the status quo, and does it often.  With nothing left to lose since the series in ending, I am expecting this last arc will be Kirkman’s masterpiece.
