SUPER MARIO BROS. was highly criticized the moment Chris Pratt was announced to voice the title character. Then, on cue, the movie was review-bombed on Rotten Tomatoes and was declared “Rotten” according to the critic reviews. So if the critics and the fans both declared the movie dead on arrival, how did it 1UP the criticism?

Faithfulness to the source material and non-stop fan service.

From the very beginning of the movie to the end, SUPER MARIO BROS. was dedicated to bringing the video game to life (sort of). Illumination provided animation that was befitting of the video games. It’s easy to forget you are watching a movie and not an hour and a half long trailer for the next installment of the game franchise. It’s so visually appealing by offering scenes that are reminiscent of the traditional side-scrolling gameplay.

After only taking a 37% drop-off from its opening weekend, SUPER MARIO BROS. surpassed its second weekend predictions with a whopping $94 million dollars at the box office. That means before it has been released in Japan, a market that is surely chomping at the bit to see this movie, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach have pulled in $700+ million dollars! It is the highest grossing video game adaptation of all-time, beating out WARCRAFT and POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU.

It is the highest grossing movie of 2023 in just 13 days.

Critics and critical fans alike tried to squash SUPER MARIO BROS. before it came out but the star-studded cast gave it the power-up that it needed. And it deserves all the coins it receives.
