Taking Flight: SUPERGIRL Ep 202 "Last Children of Krypton"

If you thought this season of SUPERGIRL was going to suddenly move slower than a speeding bullet, you were wrong. Monday night's episode was full of changes that demonstrated a willingness to adapt to their new location.

That location is The CW.

I know we're beating a dead horse here but it's crucial to be reminded that SUPERGIRL's inaugural season began on CBS. And while it started strong and ratings remained good enough to warrant a second season, moving to The CW was a point of concern to some level.

Yes, The CW has already garnered success with ARROW and THE FLASH so any fears could easily be tempered with their track record. However, SUPERGIRL is a show featuring a female lead about a character that has come and gone in comic books. Not like Green Arrow or The Flash, who have always been around.

Not to mention it's the first time a female comic book character has been given the limelight. Something even Black Widow can't claim to have with Marvel and she's been on-screen for 6 years in a supporting role.

If you're following along, season 2 of SUPERGIRL has taken flight with it's first episode, introducing Superman and Cadmus into Kara's world. Now, with episode 2 behind us, we see many changes happening and while some of them are bittersweet, most of them are bound to be astonishing.

***MILD SPOILERS AHEAD***

Winn's involvement in the DEO is a tremendous upgrade for the character. No longer sitting behind a desk or hiding in a broom closet helping Kara in secrecy, Winn is now free to exercise that big brain of his while firing off witty comments. He is the Cisco of SUPERGIRL and I'd be bold enough to say he does it better, but that's only because Cisco's storyline has taken a more serious turn over on THE FLASH. He is the audience member on-screen, saying what we all want to say but most likely wouldn't, given the opportunity. Winn, Alex and Hank Henshaw have already developed a chemistry that is far and away better than last season's combination of Winn, James and Cat.

Speaking of Cat...

Does Berlanti and crew have a thing with Shark analogies? On ARROW we heard that a shark who doesn't swim, drowns. Now Cat is talking about being a shark, swimming in circles, going nowhere. She is seeking to explore new seas so she wants to 'dive'. When SUPERGIRL moved to The CW, that also meant they would be changing film locations as well. The move from Los Angeles (where Calista Flockhart lives) to Vancouver raised concerned that the actress would no longer desire to be a part of the show and film so far from her home. Whether or not her 'leave of absence' is permanent, remains to be seen. I venture to guess that she'll still be involved in some fashion but it'll be in a way that mirrors her real life preference to not be with the rest of the cast. It's clear that CatCo. will still have a role to play in the show, so who will be stepping into her shoes?

None other than James Olsen. The perpetual camera man has received a promotion (finally), in which he will be running CatCo in Grant's absence. James was relatively MIA in episode 2 only to pop up at the end carrying a box of things into Cat's office. Mehcad Brooks announced that he is taking on the mantle of The Guardian so it seems as though Kara won't be the only one pulling 'double duty'. So it's possible his lack of involvement is a way to pull him out of the limelight for a bit to make viewers wonder what he's been up to. That being said, Superman's best friend, Jimmy Olsen, should have been around a little more often. Since he's all grown up now, it makes sense that he's not the starry-eyed fan anymore, that role appears reserved for Winn...who plays it off perfectly.

If you recall last week I mentioned that I'm not sure how they're going to put the 'Kryptonian back in the pod', meaning they've given us Superman...how can they possibly take him away? Well having multiple Metallo's certainly helped Clark realize he's still needed in Metropolis. The final scene between Melissa Benoist and Tyler Hoechlin was so beautifully done. I couldn't tell if my eyes watered up because I didn't know when I'd see Superman again, or because it was so well played that the on-screen emotion hit me hard. That being said they strongly hinted that this wasn't the last time we'd see the man of steel and the maid of might side-by-side. Did you ever think we'd live in a world where we get to see, not only Superman and Supergirl battle the forces of evil together, but Martian Manhunter and Superman?

We didn't get a lot of Manhunter CGI, as it seems The CW is doing what they can to mask it until the technology catches up. Unless of course they threw a ton of money into Metallo, in which case I think they made the right decision. Watching Supergirl melt the skin off of the metallic skeletal hand was really awesome.

Cadmus Labs is the perfect foil for Supergirl as she begins to step into her own as a full fledged superhero. Watching Kara stare into the eyes of the downed Metallo and issue a challenge to Cadmus was bone chilling. Especially when you consider that Kara, in her alternate personality, has trouble insulting her new boss, Snapper Carr; calling him the "Jerk...Guy". Watching her stone cold threatening the villainous organization? Damn. In the meantime they'll be experimenting and creating new problems for Kara and her sister Alex to combat going forward. Alex, while a mere mortal, has proven herself capable on more than one occasion. She's really a strong character, not to be outdone by the lead, and every scene she's in has you rooting for her to kick serious ass.

The conclusion of the episode finally gives us a pulse on what's to come with the mystery man in the downed Kryptonian pod from last season. While the final episode with Superman may have left you breathless, don't fret. There is so much to come in season 2 that is sure to be super.
