First Full Trailer for FOX's THE GIFTED Brings a Torn Family, Together

Last week Marvel and FOX gave us a teaser for their upcoming tv series THE GIFTED and promised a full trailer today.

As with most made for tv comic book properties, THE GIFTED is grounded in reality to deal with more dramatic themes so the focus can be more on the characters than their 'gifts'. While SFX continues to improve on most of these shows, the more fantastical they become, the harder it becomes to deliver without appearing campy.

The series will deal with siblings who have a 'gift' due to a genetic mutation. And while they're afraid to let their father know, because he apparently hunts people like them, when he finds out that his organization is after his children, he opens his eyes to acceptance.

The trailer shows acts of bullying, as many tv shows do when dealing with high school age kids. It's a sad reality and while it may cause some viewers to be triggered, it's a commentary about the society we currently live in.

There is a brief mention of the X-Men in the trailer which seems like it would be a no-brainer but given the title of the show, it almost seemed like they wanted to dis-associate themselves as much as possible.

My initial impression of the show was "oh no, not another Bryan Singer X-Men franchise". Now, from what I'm seeing, this looks to have far more characterization and depth than we're used to seeing from Singer's Hollywood mutants. Much in the spirit of the comic books, THE GIFTED looks to preach acceptance and tolerance. The X-Men used to be a commentary on the racial divide in our country. In the same way, THE GIFTED will explore similar themes, in that just because someone is different, doesn't make them less of a person.

The lack of a Hollywood budget will force Bryan Singer to tell an X-Men story the way it should be told, rather than trying to do something more flashy.

Even though we won't get to see the first episode until it debuts later this Fall, this has the potential to develop into the best 'X-Men' franchise yet.

Action-adventure family drama THE GIFTED, from Marvel, tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.
