Diamond Comic Distributors Inc has released their monthly report for the top selling products in June and, despite the mixed social commentary about DC's 'Rebirth', the company outshined it's top competitor, Marvel Comics.
While only two of the 'Rebirth' titles landed in the top ten, they were issues containing DC's flagship characters: Batman and Superman. And, even though Wonder Woman's 'Rebirth' title was absent, Princess Diana of Themyscira made an appearance as the first issue of her series landed in the #9 spot.
Marvel Comics did have the number one top seller, with CIVIL WAR II #1. This should be no surprise given the timing of the event, arriving on the heels of the similarly named CAPTAIN AMERICA movie. STAR WARS: HAN SOLO and CIVIL WAR II #2 were the only other books by Marvel that cracked the list.
The rest was heavily dominated by the 'World's Finest'.
Superman 'Rebirth' and Superman #1 offered the 'Man of Steel' a strong showing, in a time when the character has been mired in controversy. Between his portrayal in Zack Snyder's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and his treatment with the 'NEW 52' initiative, he hasn't quite been the character fans have grown to love. And while he remains true at the core, much of what has been portrayed on the surface has gotten fans angry.
Superman's books appearing in the top ten is a sign that fans of the 'Last Son of Krypton' are eager for better storytelling and are willing to put their money where their mouth is.
While noteworthy, Batman seems to always be in the top ten, so it's not necessarily newsworthy. That being said, with the inclusion of 4 different titles, it's hard to argue the significance of 'The Dark Knight's' impact on the industry.
