Welcome back to Critical Blast’s weekly look at what new comics you should check out each week.   Just a warning, I make these picks pretty much a week BEFORE I actually get to read any of these comics, so if something is a stinker, I take no blame on that.  Let's get to it!

Comics shipping this week

Traditionally, fifth weeks are usually when comic companies release specials or annuals. But more and more, Marvel just spreads their books across all five weeks of the month. Still overall, this is pretty a small week for me.

  • CABLE #1 – I can’t say this enough: James Robinson has been putting out some terrific work for Marvel in recent years. One of my favorite comics when I started reading them was X-FORCE, so I have always had a soft spot for Cable. Really curious what Robinson can do with the character.
  • SECRET EMPIRE #2 – This story feels a little too much like AGE OF ULTRON or CIVIL WAR to me, but Nick Spencer still manages to make it feel compelling. The twist ending from last issue did grab my attention, but on a whole, this is just another Marvel event in a long running series of them.
  • GENERATION X #2 – Off to a real strong start! Actually I am basically enjoying all the X-Men books right now, and it’s been a long time since I felt that way. Still hoping that Chamber has a bigger role in this book, but a worthy return for one of my favorite titles.
  • SAGA #43 – As part of Image’s 25th anniversary celebration, this book is only 25 cents and it’s supposed to be a good jump on point. Been a fan of Saga from day 1 (and I have the reviews to prove it). It is one of the consistently great comics on the market. Often heart-breaking, but with a lot of humor and creativity to it. Can’t recommend this one enough.
