From Deadline:
Disney XD is revisiting Ducktales. The network said today that it has ordered a new animated comedy series based on the Emmy-winning series that aired from 1987-1990 as part of The Disney Afternoon daily syndicated cartoon block. The new series is slated to launch in 2017. Produced by Disney Television Animation, Ducktales will again star Disney’s iconic characters Scrooge McDuck, his grandnephews Huey, Dewey and Louie, and Donald Duck.
The new series will follow Scrooge McDuck, his curious and mischief-making grandnephews — Huey, Dewey and Louie — and the optimistic yet temperamental Donald Duck as they embark on high-flying adventures worldwide. Other beloved characters slated to be in the new stories are: Duckworth, Gyro Gearloose, Launchpad McQuack, Flintheart Glomgold, Magica DeSpell & Poe, Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys (Burger Beagle, Bouncer Beagle), Mrs. Beakley and Webbigail Vanderquack.
“DuckTales’ has a special place in Disney’s TV animation history, it drew its inspiration from Disney Legend Carl Barks’ comic books and through its storytelling and artistic showmanship, set an enduring standard for animated entertainment that connects with both kids and adults,” said Marc Buhaj, SVP, Programming and General Manager, Disney XD. “Our new series will bring that same energy and adventurous spirit to a new generation.”
Commentary: Some background on why this news is so awesome to me. I grew up on Disney Afternoon, and to this day, my kids love watching old episodes of Ducktales and Darkwing Duck. Scrooge McDuck is actually my favorite Disney character, and I was real excited to hear that IDW was going to be releasing new Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge Comics. They actually show some random episodes of Ducktales, Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing on the various Disney On Demand channels, so I was kind of hoping this would lead to some kind of return of these characters.
I will admit there is a part of me that hears this news and thinks "It can't be as good as the originals" but I am definitely going to check it out and hope for the best. For the most part, I have enjoyed Disney's recent attempts to update some of their classic characters. The Tinker Bell movies have been very good. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the new Mickey shorts are pretty entertaining, and I liked Tigger And Pooh Super Sleuths. On top of all that, The 7D might be the funniest cartoon I've seen in a long time.
2017 is a LOOOONNNNGGGG way off, but I will definitely be following this story closely and will post more information as it comes out.
