After the Alien Amnesty has been pretty much accepted, there comes even more reason for people to distrust aliens--their technology.
"Crossfire" begins with Kara (our Best TV Actress of 2015 Winner, MELISSA BENOIST) trying her best to acclimate a naive Mon-El (CHRIS WOOD) to life among human beings. She's gotten him a job at CATCO under the name of plain old Mike Matthews. She's even given him glasses to complete the look, just in case he ever decides to put on a cape. Unfortunately, Mon-El must have skipped his Orientation to Earth Culture training, because he's unfamiliar with everything, like telephones and especially work. Throughout the episode, Kara catches him unloading his work onto the twitterpated executive assistant Eve Tesmacher (ANDREA BROOKS), or canoodling in the supply room.
Elsewhere in the relationship arena, Kara's adopted sister, Alex (CHYLER LEIGH), finds herself concerned about -- and attracted to -- Maggie Sawyer (FLORIANA LIMA), who has just been dumped by her girlfriend. Alex denies that her concern is anything than just that for a friend, but it becomes fairly obvious that she's discovering something new about herself.
The battle of the episode, however, comes in the form of ordinary bank robbers, led by Chet Miner (ALEXANDER CENDESE) who have been supplied with alien weaponry to pull off their jobs. We first meet them when Kara is taking a walk with her boss, James Olsen (MEHCAD BROOKS), about her trials acclimating Mon-El. They rob a bank right in front of them, and Supergirl springs into action -- as does James! But the ray guns are a suprise to them, and the crooks get away.
The focus on the alien weaponry aspect brings SUPERGIRL around to discussing politics again. The argument is that the good guys should have access to the alien weaponry for defense, citing the Second Amendment, while Kara argues that the alien weapons are bad in anybody's hands, particularly given the things they do (like disrupt gravity). But the really interesting bit in this episode involves the Cadmus scientist (BRENDA STRONG) who has been supplying the crooks with their weapons. We've seen her around, but in this episode we learn who she truly is, and it's definitely going to add a new dynamic to the series.
Other things to look for in this episode include:
- James Olsen working with Winn Schott (JEREMY JORDAN) on what will result in James becoming THE GUARDIAN
- Winn Schott working under the table with Lena Luthor (KATIE MCGRATH) to counter the alien technology
- Building hints toward the four-part CW crossover with THE FLASH, ARROW and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, "INVASION"
