Legends of Tomorrow - Jonah Hex

An errant time pirate in Liberty Colorado in 1874 results in future tracking technology falling into the hands of one Quentin Turnbull (JEFF FAHEY), allowing him not only to begin mining of a very rare mineral, but allows him to use that mineral to prevent westward expansion, effectively creating his own country.

Naturally, this causes a time aberration, which gets picked up by the device on the Waverider that Ray (BRANDON ROUTH) has lovingly named "the Trouble Alert," providing a distraction for Nate (NICK ZANO) who has been tasked with researching the connection between the amulets the team has prevented from falling into the hands of Damien Darhk -- items that, according to all the records, shouldn't exist.

The only member of the team remaining behind is Martin Stein (VICTOR GARBER), who has been having unexplained headaches and flashes of memories of some stranger in his life. He has Gideon run several scans, but there is nothing physically wrong with his brain.

Outside, the team runs across a hanging -- of none other than Jonah Hex (JOHNATHON SCHAECH), whom the team had met last season. Nate "steels up" and barges in, letting the bullets of the would-be lynch mob bounce off him, even catching one in his teeth. Nate's reveling in his new ability, but doesn't notice the shots scare the horse supporting Hex, leaving it up to Sara (CAITY LOTZ) to shoot the rope as Hex dangles from it.

With Hex's assistance, the team infiltrates Turnbull's camp. Ray, Nate and Jax (FRANZ DRAMEH) pose as tax collectors to go over Turnbull's books, while Mick (DOMINIC PURCELL) and Amaya (MAISIE RICHARDSON-SELLERS) go into the saloon, with Sara hoping that Mick will start a fight to draw out Turnbull. Mick does get Turnbull's attention, but things don't quite go the way Sara planned when it turns out the two men like each other!

Meanwhile, the tax team discover what it is in that mine that Turnbull has discovered thanks to the future technology: dwarf star mineral, like the kind that powered Ray's original suit. That suit, recently destroyed, was powered by a piece no bigger than a man's little finger. This is a mine. There's enough power here to start your own country -- and Turnbull has started by smelting them into bullets, which have an explosive property. So explosive, that when Turnbull tries to shoot Hex on sight, and Nate steps in front all steeled up to stop it, the bullet penetrates his steel body.

Back aboard the Waverider, as Gideon works on saving Nate's life, Sara finds out from Hex why he has such a hate for Turnbull, which turns into the origin of Hex's scarred face, while Amaya and Mick learn to relate to each other -- Mick having an inner animal of his own.

All of Nate's newfound feeling of power after a lifetime spent being bullied has crumbled, and Ray has to give him a pep talk about real courage. While they talk, Ray figures out what Turnbull has planned for the dwarf star material: a way to prevent the railroad from coming through, effectively blocking the U.S. Army from coming into the west. His plan is to use a locomotive loaded with dwarf star to blow up the mountain pass -- and there's enough kick in that mineral to make this easy to do.

The teams split up, with Ray, Jax and Nate sent to stop the train, while Sara and Hex make their way into Turnbull's camp under the guise of Sara (her gender hidden) as someone who captured Hex in handcuffs and is turning the bounty hunter over to Turnbull. And while they have Turnbull's attention, Mick and Amaya get to make a very large fire in the mine.

A man of steel stops a powerful locomotive, which was a nicely done metaphor by the writers. The mine goes boom, and Hex gets his man. All's well that ends well.

Except: Jax has a theory about the visions that Stein is having. He thinks that because they've intersected with Stein's younger self twice, it has altered Stein's history, and these flashes are memories of things that hadn't happened in his original timeline catching up to him. This trouble Stein, because the woman he's seeing -- he's certain that he loves her. Jax says Clarissa will be angry, but Stein posits that with the timeline altered, there may not be a Clarissa to return home to. (IMDb lists the character as one Lily Stein, portrayed by CHRISTINA BRUCATO. My money says this is the daughter he never had before, not a replacement wife. Still, the fact that the writers have introduced the concept of a person's personal timeline changing and how that would impact a time traveler is an interesting one, and I'm glad to see it being put to use.

The episode closes out with Ray showing Nate the Steel superhero outfit he made from sketches he saw Nate making (while Ray uses recovered bits of the dwarf star mineral to reconstruct his own A.T.O.M. suit), when Sara comes barging in on them with an urgent message: "Our friends back in 2016 -- they need our help." This is the kickoff for the upcoming four-part crossover with SUPERGIRL, THE FLASH and ARROW, which starts with SUPERGIRL on November 28. Be there for the INVASION!
